Quantities are a planning aid, not a complete structural release or supplier order. Keep the final approved sizes, measured stock thicknesses and actual opening dimensions with your purchase list. Opening-worksheet pieces must replace the affected base-grid members, rather than being counted twice. Printed checks reflect this browser’s current checklist; the downloadable blank PDF starts unchecked.

Framing & cut guide

Put a tape measure to the plan. Start with the wall dimensions, lay out the plates, then calculate each confirmed opening.

Wall worksheet · proposed assembly. The exact lengths below follow the corner and plate arrangement shown here. The 3D model stays a layout illustration; this worksheet does not change it. Confirm actual lumber, rough openings and the structural design before cutting. Items that cannot yet be sized are listed under Remaining pieces.

Shed + Coop · DuckYard · Proposed wall-framing worksheet. Dimensions are inches unless noted. Printed calculations do not constitute structural approval.

What the dimensions measure

The shed footprint is measured to the outside faces of the wall framing. Siding, sheathing, roof overhangs and the run are outside that rectangle. Vertical wall dimensions start at the top of the deck.

An 8 ft wall is the complete framed wall height. An 8 ft stud or a 92⅝ in precut stud will change that height. Measure the lumber you receive; this worksheet assumes dry, dressed 2 × 4 stock.

Corner convention for this worksheet. It resolves the overlapping wall ends in the illustrative model. Corner backing, fastening and bracing remain part of the final assembly design.

Choose one corner convention

Use the same datum on every plate. This guide makes the front and rear walls full width, then fits both side walls between them.

  1. Bottom and first top plates: front/rear are 144 in; sides are 149 in.
  2. Second top plates: sides span the full 156 in. Front/rear fit between them at 137 in, creating a 3½ in corner lap.
  3. Partition: a 137 in wall fits between the side frames. Its centerline is 104 in from the outside face of the original front frame. Its bottom and proposed two top plates are each 137 in.
  4. Frame and square before removing thresholds: lay out the full bottom plates, then remove only the confirmed floor-level rough openings. Raised vent and hatch openings retain their bottom plate.

Full-length pieces are assumed. If you need splices, obtain the required locations, overlap and fastening before substituting shorter stock. The diagram specifies geometry; it does not establish the required corner post or connection detail.

Plate set: 12 exterior pieces + 3 proposed partition pieces. Cut one reference piece, check it against the deck, then repeat. Cut lengths exclude blade kerf; leave kerf and end-trimming allowance when nesting cuts in purchased boards. A nominal stock length is not a guarantee of a square, usable end.

16 in layout marks and how to read them

Numbers below are stud centerlines in inches from the outside front or left frame datum. Mark both edges at centerline ± ¾ in. Mark corresponding plates together and mark the stud side of each line. Preserve the global datum through the inset side and partition walls.

These are 52 layout positions, not 52 full studs to buy or cut. Delete or shorten affected grid studs at openings; add the approved kings, jacks, corner backing and partition backing. End bays are intentionally shorter than a regular bay. For an inset side plate, subtract 3½ in from the listed global mark to measure from the physical end of that plate.

Openings in the updated model

These are modeled opening targets, not manufacturer rough openings. A finished clear opening may need a larger framed opening for a jamb, threshold, shims or hardware. All vertical measurements below are above the deck.

Confirm framing above the retained vent. Both windows and the entry-side vent have been removed. The remaining vent on the right wall ends 92 in above the deck; the double top plate begins at 93 in. That leaves only 1 in for a separate header. Resolve this opening’s header/bearing detail or elevation before cutting. The model’s shallow header is illustrative.

Calculate one confirmed opening

Use a single, isolated opening with continuous jacks from the bottom plate to the header and, for a raised opening, a sill between those jacks. Enter your confirmed rough-opening dimensions and approved header detail. This computes lengths; it does not select a load-bearing header.

Your opening cuts will appear here after the dimensions and header detail are entered. They will also be included in the printed guide and CSV.

See the formulas and cut assumptions

Let W = rough-opening width; B = rough-opening bottom above deck; H = rough-opening height; D = approved header depth; J = jacks per end. Actual stud/plate thickness is 1½ in. The header underside is B + H.

  • King stud = 96 − 1½ − 3 = 91½ in.
  • Jack stud = B + H − 1½. This jack stands on the retained bottom plate outside the doorway.
  • Header member length = W + 2 × J × 1½. Each header ply has that length; its cross-section, material, bearing and fastening are provided by the approved detail.
  • Upper cripple = 93 − (B + H) − D. Zero means the header directly meets the first top plate; a negative result does not fit.
  • Raised-opening rough sill = W, installed between the continuous jacks. Lower cripple = B − 3 (bottom plate + sill thickness).
  • Cripple counts use full-width 1½ in studs on the 16 in global grid within the supported header or sill. Counts do not include extra backing, fastening blocks or members required by the approved opening detail.

The worksheet handles a conventional horizontal header with a level bottom and top. It does not cover header hangers, flush beams, engineered portal frames, overlapping openings or multiple sill layers. Every output is shown to the nearest 1/16 in; entered dimensions must be in 1/16 in increments.

Nest-box panel cuts · three 12 in cells

The preliminary build package’s C-02 sheet supplies these nonstructural fixture cuts. They assume plywood that actually measures ½ in thick and produce a bank 38 in wide × 12½ in deep × 13 in high.

½ in plywood pieceQuantityCut dimensionsAssembly / fit
Top + bottom238 × 12½ inFull-width panels. Vertical panels fit between them.
Two sides + two dividers412 × 12 in12 in high × 12 in deep. Position for three equal 12 in clear cells.
Rear closure blank138 × 12 inFit between top/bottom and cap the back ends of vertical panels. Coordinate the egg-hatch cutout or removable access before fastening.
Removable bedding lips312 × 3 inStarting blanks. Fit to the assembled cell openings and allow removal clearance.

Assembly interpretation: the 12 in high vertical panels sit on the bottom and under the top; the rear panel caps their 12 in deep ends between those two horizontal panels. This reconciles the C-02 dimensions. Mounting cleats, support cuts and the hatch fit are measured after the partition is framed.

Measure plywood thickness before cutting the bank

Keeping three cells at 12 in clear width, let t be the measured plywood thickness: bank width = 36 + 4t; total height = 12 + 2t; total depth = 12 + t. Top/bottom cuts are (36 + 4t) × (12 + t); rear blank is (36 + 4t) × 12. The four vertical panels remain 12 × 12.

For actual 15/32 in plywood, the adjusted top/bottom are 37⅞ × 12 15/32 in, the rear blank is 37⅞ × 12 in, and total bank height is 12 15/16 in. The CSV retains the original true-½-in schedule, so revise those rows if your measured stock differs.

Remaining pieces before a complete cut list

The model does not supply these construction details. They stay marked Design hold in the CSV so a missing piece cannot look like a completed takeoff.

Roof, gables and run supports
Obtain the truss or rafter design, roof bearing/heel detail, gable framing, posts, beams, bracing, connections and uplift anchorage. The model’s truss shapes and post sections are placeholders.
Floor and foundation
Confirm mower wheel loads, floor panel thickness, joist/rim/beam sizes, support spacing, footing design and actual deck height. These determine the floor-member and ramp cuts.
Wall corners and opening assemblies
Resolve corner backing, partition junctions, sheathing/bracing, header sizes, jack counts, plate splices and the retained high-vent detail. Then complete the stud quantities.
Doors, gate, ramp and coop fixtures
Confirm product rough openings, leaf/jamb thicknesses, hardware clearances, ramp frame/decking and fixture mounting details before completing those cut schedules.
Roof geometry reference · not a rafter cut

The shown 6:12 pitch is 26.565°. A 72 in horizontal half-span has 36 in rise and an 80.498 in theoretical sloped line (about 80½ in). A 12 in horizontal overhang adds 13.416 in along that slope. These are reference lines only: ridge thickness, heel height, bearing, seat/birdsmouth, fascia and the structural scheme change the actual cuts. The illustrated trusses should not be cut from the 3D model.

A practical cutting sequence
  1. Confirm the 144 × 156 in deck/frame datums, check opposite sides, and compare both diagonals to square the rectangle. Verify the final wall and roof details.
  2. Label each bottom and first top plate with wall name, datum end and inside face. Clamp matching plates together to transfer the layout.
  3. Mark confirmed opening edges and the complete king/jack assemblies before marking the remaining 16 in stud grid.
  4. Cut a reference full stud at 91½ in only after confirming the 96 in plate-stack height. Square both ends; account for the saw kerf in your stock layout.
  5. Dry-fit one wall and each opening assembly. Measure each nonstandard block or cripple against its actual bay; do not extrapolate regular 14½ in blocking into end bays.
  6. Raise, plumb, brace and connect the walls following the final design. Install the lapped second top plates and remove confirmed door thresholds when the assembly is secure.
